Green tea is made from the leaves of Camellia Sinensis. They undergo minimal oxidation during their processing. Originated in China, it has become associated with many cultures throughout Asia. Green tea has recently become relatively widespread in the West where black tea has been the traditionally consumed tea. Obviously, no one food will shelter you from disease. Your health is enclosed in your lifestyle and your genes, so even if you drink green tea many times a day, you still need to take care of yourself in other ways, like avoiding smoking, being active and energetic, and eating a healthy diet.

Green tea is used as a raw material for extracts used in various beverages, dietary supplements, and cosmetic items. Many varieties of this tea have been developed in the countries where it is produced. These varieties may differ appreciably due to variable growing conditions, horticulture, production processing, and harvesting time.

Green tea improves blood flow and reduces cholesterol. It also hinders the formation of plaques that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. About 2-3 grams of this tea per 100 ml of water, or about one teaspoon per five-ounce (150 ml) cup, is recommended.

How to prepare and Precautions:

  1. Don’t add green tea to boiling water. It’s not good for Catechins, the healthy chemicals in the tea. Simply boil the water, remove it from the burner, and thereafter put green tea leaves in it for 2- 3 minutes. It’s best steeped at a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit (74 to 85 degrees Celsius) before you pour it over the tea.
  2. Add lemon. Vitamin C makes the Catechins easier to absorb.
  3. You can add some honey for taste if you hate it’s taste, but it’s recommended not to add any sweetener.
  4. Don’t add milk in green tea. The lactose in the milk may damage some of the antioxidants in the green tea.

Things to Consider Before Drinking Green Tea

Green tea has a significant amount of caffeine. The caffeine level is about one third the amount of a coffee, but if you’re drinking 6 or 7 cups of green tea a day then you will feel the caffeine’s effects. It is especially important for people that are sensitive to caffeine to be careful with the amount they are drinking. One should consume 2 to 3 cups of green tea per day.

Drinking green tea before bed keeps you awake because of the caffeine level. Some people may find green tea soothing and it helps them sleep, while others have a very difficult time falling asleep. If you are sensitive to the caffeine and it keeps you awake, try not to drink green tea an hour before you are planning to go to bed.

Pregnant women should avoid consumption of green tea.
